Brandon Wolter Named GNAC Defensive Player of the Week

October 9, 2018

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University redshirt freshman goalkeeper Brandon Wolter has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, for the period of Oct. 1-7.

Wolter (Vancouver, WA/Union) made 9 saves and recorded his fourth shutout of the season in helping lead the Vikings to a 1-0-1 record on the road at Montana State Billings (1-1 tie) and Northwest Nazarene (5-0 victory).

Wolter is the third Viking to be recognized as a GNAC Men’s Soccer Player of the Week this season, joining Georg Cholewa (Offense – Sept. 3-9) and Jeremiah Lee (Defense – Sept. 10-16). Cholewa was also nominated for offensive player of the week honors after scoring three goals during the road trip, but the honor went to Simon Fraser’s Matteo Polisi (4 goals, 2 assists).

In 10 starts this season, Wolter has recorded the second-best goals against average in the GNAC at 0.98 and is also 2nd in the league with 4 shutouts.

The Vikings are tied for 3rd in the GNAC standings with a 2-2-1 conference record and are 6-4-1 overall. WWU returns to action this week with a pair of tough road matches, traveling to play Seattle Pacific on Thursday at Interbay Stadium (4:30 pm) and then takes on nationally No. 1-ranked Simon Fraser on Sunday night at Terry Fox Field (7 pm).
