Vikings No. 1 in First NCAA II West Region Ranking

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Riding a current 20-match winning streak and a perfect 19-0 record against West Region teams, the Western Washington University volleyball team has been ranked No. 1 in first edition of the NCAA Division II West Regional rankings.
The West Region rankings are the deciding factor that will determine the eight-team NCAA II West Regional Tournament that will be played on a campus site November 15-17. The No. 1 team in the final ranking will likely host the regional on campus, with the winner of the regional advancing to the Elite Eight at the NCAA Division II Fall Festival in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Listed No. 2 in the recent AVCA Division II Coaches Poll, WWU has advanced to each of the last six NCAA West Regionals three of the last four years hosted by a Great Northwest Athletic Conference school. The Vikings were the No. 2 seed at the 2017 West Regional hosted by California Baptist in Riverside, California.
The next regional ranking will be October 31 and the final ranking will come out November 7. The selection show announcing the eight teams and the host for the NCAA II West Regional will stream on NCAA.com on Sunday, November 11 at 7 pm PT/10 pm ET.
WWU is listed ahead of No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino (20-2) and No. 3 Cal State Los Angeles (20-1). WWU beat Cal State San Bernardino in five sets (22-25, 25-22, 17-25, 25-17, 15-11) earlier this season at the D2 West Region Volleyball Showcase. GNAC member schools Central Washington (No. 5) and Alaska Anchorage (No. 6) are also listed among the top 10 teams from the West Region.
Western has five remaining regular-season contests, beginning with a Thursday road match at Montana State Billings (7 pm MT/6 pm PT). The Vikings carry a perfect 15-0 conference record into the match vs. the Yellowjackets and have won 33 straight GNAC contests dating back to last season.
