WWU joins Pac-8 Hockey Conference
May 25, 2018
The Western Washington University hockey team has been accepted as a member of the Pac-8 Hockey Conference for the upcoming 2018-19 season, the league announced this week. Helping to make the announcement were A.J. Boldan, executive director of Pac-8 Hockey, and Larry MacDonald, head coach of the Vikings.
The change in conference affiliation will help elevate the WWU hockey program as it will face tougher competition up and down the west coast.
The Pac-8 is collegiate men’s club hockey conference which competes in Division II of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. Other members of the Pac-8 include Arizona State, Cal, Oregon, UCLA, USC, Washington, Washington State and Utah. WWU will be the only member institution whose varsity programs do not compete in the NCAA’s Pac-12 conference.
Western has been a part of the ACHA since 2014, previously competing as a member of the North Pacific Hockey Conference.
Prior to 2014, WWU was a member of the National Collegiate Hockey Association and won the NCHA National Championship in 2012.
The Vikings’ first season as a member of the Pac-8 will begin in September and run through February 2019. Home games will be played at the Bellingham Sportsplex.
