Schouten & Faber Lead Lynden Christian to Shutout Win Over Bellingham
September 1, 2018
Bookend touchdowns in the first and second quarter paved the way for the Lynden Christian to shutout Bellingham 23-0 in the football season opener for both schools. The Lyncs victory, as heard on The Doug Lange Network, was their 4th over Bellingham in the last 5 years.
LC grabbed an early lead as Bellingham struggled offensively. Lyncs
quarterback Trajan Schouten and fullback Sam Faber connected on near identical 9 yard TD tosses at the 1:29 mark of the 1st quarter and with 6:36 left to go in the second.
"Really proud of our guys and what they did, they're excited and thrilled and I'm not sure if they knew what to expect tonight, but a good effort on both sides of the ball," said Lynden Christian head coach Dan Kaemingk.
Schouten, making his first varsity start as signal caller, also connected with Tanner Fenestra on a 14-yard TD strike in the 3rd quarter.
We asked the junior QB how he felt out on the field in the season opener.
Kaemingk also sounded impressed with Schouten's performance
Blake DeRuyter added a 25 yard field goal for the Lyncs in the 4th quarter.
The brightest moment for Bellingham came early on the defensive side of the ball. On Lynden Christian's opening drive the Red Raiders made two big stops at their own 1 yard line, preventing a score and taking over on downs.
Coming up in week two, Lynden Christian hosts Annacortes Friday, September 7th and Bellingham takes on Lakewood at Civic Stadium on Saturday, September 8th.
