Prep Football - Week 2 Preview
September 4, 2018
Week two of the prep football season features a busy Civic Stadium, one of the top rivalries of the year and big neutral site clash in the 1A ranks. It is also a week that finds some perrenial powerhouse teams looking to bounce back after week one loses.
Civic Stadium is the place to be for football fans this weekend. After outlasting Redmond 14-10 in their opener, Squalicum will jump into Wesco 3A North play with a match-up versus Arlington. It's a game you can hear on The Doug Lange Network beginning at 6:45pm.
It's a double-header at Civic on Saturday. Bellingham will look for win number one when they host Lakewood at 4:00pm. Sehome and Mount Baker follow at 7:00pm (also on The Doug Lange Network beginning at 6:45pm). The Mariners and Mountaineers are both coming off of last second losses in the opening week.
In a controversial ending Sehome lost 28-21 to Nooksack Valley. Time ran out on the Mariners after running back Dawson Smith was tackled near the Pioneers goalline. According to multiple reports, officials did not rule the runner down or award a touchdown and Sehome was not able to run another play as time ran out.
Mount Baker's comeback came up just show in a 35-34 loss to Lynden. The Mountaineers scored on a Hail-Mary pass as time ran out in the 4th quarter, but QB Kaleb Bass was sacked by Brock Heppner on the two point conversion attempt.
Fresh off that victory Lynden will play their biggest rivalry game of the year. The Lions will host Ferndale Friday at 7:00pm. The Golden Eagles are looking to bounce back after suffering a 42-14 home loss to 4A Lake Stevens. Ferndale is chasing a third straight win over the Lions and have won 3 of the last 5 meetings.
Another marquee match-up in week two will be played at a neutral site. 1A powers Meridian and Colville will clash Saturday at 1:00pm at the Peshastin-Dryden Sports Complex. The Trojans lost in the 1A title game last December, while the Indians fell in the quarterfinals of their 5th straight trip to the state playoffs.
