Prep Football: Figuring Out Week 9

October 23, 2018

Week 9 of the prep football season offers many different types of games for the 11 Whatcom County squads. There will be final regular season match-ups, crossover games and postseason seeding showdowns.

The four Northwest Conference 1A squads will wrap up the regular season with games on Thursday. Lynden Christian visits Meridian and Mount Baker plays host to Nooksack Valley.

The Trojans (6-2/4-1 NWC) can secure the 1A title outright with a win over the Lyncs (6-2/3-2). A Lynden Christian win combined with a Mountaineers (5-3/3-2) victory over Nooksack Valley (3-5/0-5) would create a 3-way tie for first place and lead to a possible tiebreaker on Saturday.

The top two squads will advance to the playoffs in week 10. The 3rd place finisher will play the North Sound No. 4 seed in a loser out "play in" game October 30th.

Lummi Nation will look to bounce back from a lopsided loss to Neah Bay last week in a road game Friday at Darrington.

Squalicum and Ferndale play crossover games with the WESCO 3A South Friday. The 3A North champion Storm (7-1/5-1) play at Snohomish. The winner advances to districts as the No. 1 seed and will play the Metro league No. 5 seed. The loser is the Wesco 2 seed and will play the South Sound Conference No. 4 seed.

Ferndale (3-5/3-3) battles Meadowdale (3-5/3-5) at Edmonds District Stadium in a loser out contest. The winner advances to districts as the Wesco No. 7 seed and a match-up against top-ranked Eastside Catholic out of the Metro league.

You can hear the Golden Eagles vs. the Mavericks on The Doug Lange Network with coverage beginning at 7:45pm.

In the 2A, Lake division squads Blaine, Bellingham and Sehome all play loser-out games Friday. The Borderites (4-4/2-3) face a rematch with Mountlake Terrace (5-3/4-1) at Edmonds District Stadium. the Hawks beat Blaine 40-0 October 5th.

You can hear Blaine versus Mountlake Terrace on The Doug Lange Network. Coverage begins at 4:45pm.

Winners of Week 9 games will be seeded by a poll of the coaches of the remaining teams, then matched against Sky teams in reverse order for Week 10 games. Lynden, Archbishop Murphy, Burlington and Sedro-Woolley are all on a bye and await the Lake division winners in week 10.
