Pair of Vikings Compete at 2018 USATF Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa - A pair of former Western Washington University track & field All-Americans competed in the javelin competition on Thursday at the 2018 USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Drake Stadium. 

Bethany Drake (Sandy, OR) finished 4th in the competition recording a personal-best throw of 54.20m/177-10, breaking her old record of 54.18m/177-9 set at the 2016 NCAA II Outdoor Track & Field Championships where she placed 2nd. Drake was a two-time NCAA II national champion in the javelin winning in 2014 and 2017, and placing 2nd in 2016. Drake placed 9th at least year's USATF Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, California, just missing the final round.

Katie Reichert (Longview, WA/Kelso) placed 9th in Des Moines, narrowly missing out on the finals by one inch. Reichert recorded her best throw in the opening series on her second turn with a mark of 50.07m/164-3. Reichert was a four-time All-American in the javelin, placing in the top 8 at the NCAA II Championships in each of her four years in the competition. 

Vancouver, Washington native Kara Winger won her eighth USATF Championship with a throw of 62.88m/206-3.
