Hayden Dohner leads Blaine past Sehome

April 3, 2018

It took an extra inning, but the Blaine baseball squad finally picked up their first Northwest Conference victory of the season. The Borderites edged Sehome 6-to-5 in eight innings Tuesday at Joe Martin Field.

Junior Hayden Dohner got the game winning RBI single in the top of the 8th. The 3rd baseman went 3-for-4, with 1 double, two singles, a run scored and 1 RBI.

Dohner said he eventually got the pitch he was looking for on his game winning single. "I was hunting for a fastball early and I was expecting an off-speed, but got a fastball outside and took it outside."

Blaine wiped out an early 3-nothing Sehome lead with a 4-run 4th inning. The Borderites put up 6 runs on 11 hits with 3 errors in the victory.

Sehome finished the game with 5 runs on 6 hits, while committing 2 errors. Mel Ketteridge lead the way for the Mariners going 3-for-5 with 3 singles and 2 RBI's.

With the win Blaine improves to 3-and-6 on the year with a 1-and-3 Northwest Conference mark. The Borderites play at Sedro-Woolley April 4th.

Cam Ellis pitched 3 innings to pick up the victory on the hill. Sehome's Jacob Kaepernick suffered the loss in relief.

Blaine skipper Tanner Olson told The Doug Lange Network he was very impressed by the comeback from his squad.

"We've been struggling to get the bats going, but we've been talking about fight and pride and stuff like that," said Olson. "To get down early, that's exactly what we needed to see right there."

It was the third straight loss for Sehome (7-5/2-3 NWC). The Mariners are off until April 10th when they play at Meridian.
