Prep Football Training Camp - Lynden Lions
2017-2018 Record: 5-6; 3-3 in League
The Lynden Lions go from a rare losing campaign last season to jumping into the new look Sky Division of the revamped 2A classification of the Northwest Conference. With rivals Archbishop Murphy, Burlington, Sedro-Woolley and Lakewood in tow, the division looks to be a powerhouse.
Since the 2007- 2008 season Lynden, Archbishop Murphy, Sedro-Woolley and Burlington have combined to play in 11 2A state championship games, sometimes against each other. Lynden has 5 championships during the time frame while Archbishop Murphy and Sedro-Woolley have each won once.
Lynden head coach Blake VanDalen says building off a strong finish last season is key with such a tough schedule right out of the gate this year.
Van Dalen gets quarterback James Marsh and receivers Carson Bode and Kobe Elsner back for their senior seasons. The trio and others on the football squad bring the experience of winning a state championship in basketball to the gridiron this year. Elsner told The Doug Lange Network winning a state title gives them an experience factor that's hard to match.
On defense, VanDalen called Payton Scott an anchor of the 2017 squad and is expecting more of the same this year. He is also looking for senior Grant VanderYacht to build on the spark he showed late in his junior year.
The Lions better be ready right out of the chute. Lynden opens on the road at Mount Baker August 31st. Match-ups versus Ferndale and Archbishop Murphy in weeks two and four follow.
