Prep Baseball Saturday: Big Games for Meridian, Sehome & Lynden
May 10, 2019
Three Whatcom County prep baseball teams are in action in the playoffs today. Meridian is chasing a district tournament crown while Sehome and Lynden face do or die games in their bids to reach state.
Meridian (11-10) faces the tall task of knocking off Cedar Park Christian (19-3) in the 1A District 1/2 championship game at Joe Martin Field. You can listen to the Trojans and the Eagles right here on TDLN.
Both teams are hot at the right time. The Trojans have won 7 of their last 10 games, while the Eagles have been victorious in 8 of their last 10 outings.
Meridian coach Steve Slesk told TDLN his team is feeling good coming off of their tournament wins over Coupeville and Kings last week, but also know how tough Cedar Park Christian is.
"They're going to give us all we can handle that's for sure," said Slesk. "They swing it real good one-through-nine. There's not too many holes in their lineup and they've got a couple of real good guys on the mound that we're going to have to find a way to score some runs."
Both teams have already clinched a state berth, but there's still plenty on the line heading into the Regionals next Saturday. The winner will play at Volunteer Park in Anacortes at 1:00pm versus the District 4 No. 3 qualifier. The loser has to travel to Castle Rock High School for a 10:00am game versus the District 3 No. 2 squad.
In the 2A ranks, Sehome and Lynden both face winner to state/loser out games in Anacortes. The Mariners and Lions will square off against familiar foes as they take on Northwest Conference opponents.
Sehome (15-8) battle Sedro-Woolley (19-3) at 11:00am at Volunteer Park. You can hear the Lions versus the Cubs on KAPS 660AM Radio.
Sehome is looking to bounce back after falling 6-3 to top-seeded Archbishop Murphy in the semifinals on Tuesday. Sedro-Woolley kept their season alive with a 6-1 win over Burlington on the same day. The Cubs won the lone regular season match-up topping the Mariners 4-2 on April 25th.
Lynden (16-5) takes on Anacortes (13-10) at Daniels Field at 11:00am. You can hear the Lions versus the Seahawks on KBRC1430AM Radio.
Lynden will look to keep the momentum going after winning a loser-out game Tuesday versus Blaine 4-2 on the same day Anacortes fell 1-0 to Liberty in the semifinals. The Lions took the regular season game, topping the Seahawks 6-4 on April 17th.
The winners of the 11am games advance to the Regional round of 2A State and will play each other for 3rd and 4th place at 2:00pm.
