WWU's Shearyna Labasan Named GNAC
co-Pitcher of the Week
March 11, 2019
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University senior softball player Shearyna Labasan has been selected as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-Pitcher of the Week, for games played March 4-10.
Labasan (Mililani, HI/Maryknoll) returned from an early-season knee injury to make her season debut in grand fashion. She pitched in all four games of WWU’s 3-1 conference road trip to Oregon, combining to go 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA. The right-handed allowed only 2 runs in 16.2 innings pitched, including a string of 13.2 consecutive scoreless innings to open the season.
She started all four games at Concordia and Western Oregon, making a pair of starts in the circle and two more at third base. At the plate she went 4-for-15 (.267), including going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in the series finale vs. Western Oregon.
Labasan becomes the third Viking player to earn GNAC Player of the Week honors this season, joining senior first baseman Emily Benson and senior pitcher Makinlee Sellevold, who swept the awards last week. This is the third GNAC Pitcher of the Week honor in Labasan’s career, also picking up the award as a freshman in 2016 and a junior in 2018.
The Vikings are off to a 7-1 start in GNAC play and are 13-6 overall under first-year head coach Sheryl Gilmore. WWU has won nine of its last 11 games, and four of the six defeats have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
WWU returns to Viking Field this weekend hosting Central Washington (Saturday) and Saint Martin’s (Sunday) in GNAC doubleheaders starting at noon.
