WWU Opens GNAC Tourney Play Today

The WWU women’s basketball team opens the postseason today with a quarterfinal match-up vs. Simon Fraser in the 2019 GNAC Championships in Carver Gym in Bellingham. WWU(16-12, 11-9) is the No. 6 seed in the tournament. SFU(17-10, 13-7) is the No. 3 seed.
The Vikings are looking for a three-peat over the Clan. Facing Simon Fraser for the third time this season, Western has posted a 2-0 record. They defeated SFU in Burnaby 70-62 on Nov. 27 and won 67-49 February 26th in Carver Gym. WWU has won 8 of the last 9 in the series vs. SFU.
WWU center Anna Schwecke recorded a 26-point, 19-rebound double-double vs. Simon Fraser on Feb. 26. Schwecke is averaging 11.9 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season. In four career games vs. SFU, Schwecke has totaled 89 points (22.5 points/game), 55 rebounds (13.8 rebounds/game) and is shooting 73.7% (42-for-57).
Tip-off between the Vikings and the Clan is scheduled for 2:15pm. The game is the second of the day, with a quadruple-header slated for WECU Court at Carver Gym.
The winner of today's quarterfinal moves on to a semifinal match-up versus the No. 2 seed Northwest Nazarene Friday at 2:15pm.
