Winter Weather Flattens Playoff Basketball
February 5, 2019
The winter blast that hit Washington State Sunday is continuing to postpone playoff basketball for Whatcom County basketball teams. Games in the 1A Northwest District 1 boys and girls tournament were delayed for a second straight day Tuesday. A modified bracket had to be created and approved by the athletic directors of the involved Northwest Conference and North Sound teams in order to move forward.
Opening round games, originally scheduled for Monday, involving Meridian, Lynden Christian and Nooksack Valley will now be played Wednesday. While none of the three local schools were closed Tuesday, attempts to play the rescheduled games fell flat after the weather conditions forced the closure of many of the opponent schools.
In the new bracket for the 1A boys Nooksack Valley will host Sultan (6pm) and Granite Falls will travel to South Whidbey (6:45pm) in loser out games. Meridian will travel to Kings (6:00pm) and Lynden Christian will host Cedar Park Christian (7:00pm) in the double elimination portion of the bracket.
Winners of the loser out contests will play the losers of the double elimination games on Thursday to advance to the 3rd and 4th place Saturday at Mount Vernon High School.
Winners of the opening round double elimination games will advance to a match-up Saturday for 1st and 2nd place also at Mount Vernon High School.
The same format applies for the girls tournament. Granite Falls travels to Nooksack Valley (7:45pm) and Coupeville hosts Sultan (7:00pm) in loser out games. Meridian hosts Cedar Park Christian (7:00pm) and Lynden Christian travels to King's (7:45pm) in the double-elimination portion of the bracket.
There are more concerns for the remainder of the week with the forecast calling for more snow on Thursday, Friday and into the weekend. Complete seeding for the 2A and 3A district 1 tournaments has yet to be decided, with teams down south having their final regular season contests canceled by the snow.
