Big 2nd Half Pushes Ferndale Past Meridian
January 18, 2019
A stifling second-half defensive lockdown helped the Ferndale girls basketball team notch their biggest road victory of the year. Call it revenge or catching an opponent at the right time, but the Golden Eagles left little doubt as to which team was the better squad on this particular Thursday night with a 64-40 victory over Meridian.
Leading 26-22 at halftime Ferndale blew things open in the third quarter outscoring the Trojans 24-to-7. The Golden Eagles would end up holding Meridian to just 18 point in the 2nd half.
Sophomore guard Jamie Johnson lead Ferndale with 15 points while senior center Kim Weden added 10 points off the bench.
"I think what really brought the team together was just wanting each other to score," said Johnson. "Not just playing selfish and playing for each other and just having so much fun doing that."
With the win Ferndale (11-5/6-3 NWC) avenged a 7 point loss to Meridian (13-4/6-3 NWC) back in early December. The Golden Eagles coughed up a double-digit lead in the home loss.
Another possible comeback was not lost on Ferndale head coach Mike Ivy, especially going against Meridian's star post player Jolee Sipma.
"She's the real deal, so you always gotta know where she's at and they can shoot the ball," said Ivy. "I thought our defense on the guards made it really hard to get it in to her and you know, I think when you share the way we shared today, we can beat a lot of good teams."
Sipma was the lone double-figure scorer for Meridian, finishing with 13 points. The Trojans have now suffered three straight losses. They will look to bounce back Tuesday, January 22nd on the road at Squalicum.
Ferndale will look for their 3rd straight victory when they next hit the hardwood Tuesday with a home game versus Bellingham.
