Vikings Fall to Seattle Pacific 86-72 in GNAC Play

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University junior forward Trevor Jasinsky recorded his league-leading seventh 20-point game of the season, but the Vikings dropped their Great Northwest Athletic Conference contest vs. Seattle Pacific University 86-72 Thursday night on WECU Court in Carver Gym.

 

The Vikings dropped to 7-6 on the season with their fourth consecutive loss and dropped to 1-2 in GNAC play. Seattle Pacific improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

 

Jasinsky (Camas, WA) led all players with 20 points, connecting on 8-of-17 shots from the field. The junior was 2-for-7 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

 

Four Vikings reached double-figures in scoring, with junior forward Cameron Retherford (Portland, OR/Benson/Portland CC) returning to the starting lineup after missing three games to score 11 points. Freshman forward/guard Jalen Green (Renton, WA/Lindbergh) added 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench (3-for-7 FG) and sophomore forward Luke Lovelady (Tacoma, WA/Life Christian/Point Loma) chipped in 10 points and a team-high 5 rebounds.

 

Overall the Vikings shot 45.2 percent from the field (28-for-62) and were 7-for-21 from 3-point range. The Falcons had a sizeable advantage at the free throw line going 18-for-24 from the charity stripe, compared to 9-for-11 for the Vikings.

 

SPU had a balanced offensive attack that featured five players scoring in double-figures, led by 18 points from sophomore guard Harry Cavell (7-for-15 FG). Cavell scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half, going 6-for-10 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. Senior forward Coleman Wooten added 16 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists and senior forward Sam Simpson contributed 12 points on 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. 

 

WHEN THE FALCONS PULLED AWAY

Facing a nine-point deficit coming out of the half, but Vikings came out of the break on a 13-7 run to pull to within three points at 52-49 at the 15:09 mark. SPU answered with a 16-7 run to build the lead to 12 points at 68-56 and held a double-digit lead for all but a few possessions the rest of the way.

 

FIRST HALF RECAP

The Vikings led 20-18 following a layup by Leif Anderson at the 10:58 mark, but SPU responded with a 9-0 run that turned the two-point deficit into a seven-point lead at 27-20. SPU would not trail the rest of the game, building their lead to as many as 12 points in the first half before heading into halftime with a 45-36 advantage. Trevor Jasinsky scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first half, while Harry Cavell fueled the Falcons late-half rally with 15 points on 6-for-10 shooting.

 

JASINSKY CONTINUES TO SHINE

Trevor Jasinsky recorded his seventh 20-point game of the season, the most among GNAC players. The junior forward is averaging 19.3 point per game and has scored in double-digits in 12 of 13 games this season. Northwest Nazarene’s Adonis Arms is second in the GNAC with six 20-point performances.

WWU returns to action on Saturday hosting nationally-ranked Saint Martin’s (No. 11 D2SIDA, No. 21 NABC). The game vs. the Saints (10-1, 3-0) will tip-off at 7 pm in Carver Gym.
