Sehome Tops 2A Scholastic Cup Standings
December 10, 2018
The student-athletes at Sehome High School have wrapped up the Fall sports season on top. The Mariners lead the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association Scholastic Cup standings in the 2A ranks.
Schools that finish at the top of their respective classifications in state athletic competition receive points, as do schools that finish at the top in team academic performance. According to the WIAA, sportsmanship also plays a big role with substantial points deducted for ejections from contests.
Led by a boys cross country state championship and a volleyball academic championship (3.756 GPA), Sehome totaled 515 points, 100 points in front of second place Liberty. Bellingham finished the Fall sports season in the top-10 at No. 6 with 295 points.
After capturing a state title in volleyball and an academic championship in football (3.401 GPA), Lynden Christian is 3rd in the 1A classification. The Lyncs totaled 405 points.
No other Whatcom County schools finished Fall in the top-10 although the Ferndale girls soccer team took the 3A academic championship with a 3.920 GPA.
