February 23, 2019
BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University head golf coach Luke Bennett has announced that Sophia Schmidt and Elise Sumner have signed a national letter of intent to play for the Vikings beginning in 2019-20.
Schmidt (Bellingham, WA) is a two-time All-Northwest Conference MVP out of Bellingham High School and a two-time Washington Junior Golf Association Winter Golf Classic champion. The Bellingham native took 5th place at the 2018 WIAA 2A State Championships and is a two-time WJGA state participant.
“I am thrilled to have Sophia join the Viking Golf family,” said Bennett. “I’ve been fortunate to watch Sophia’s game grow over the years. She has an outstanding work ethic and serious passion for the game.”
Sumner (North Tustin, CA) is a product of Foothill High School and a four-year varsity letterwinner on the links. She has earned all-conference honors all four years during her prep career and was a top-5 finisher at her league championship each season. Sumner was also a two-time team captain and four times earned scholar-athlete distinction.
“I am excited to bring Elise into our program and watch her grow,” added Bennett. “Her resume proves she is very competitive and very driven. I know she will make an impact on the program right away.”
