Prep Football Training Camp - Blaine Borderites
2017-2018 Record: 1-9; 0-7 in League
The Blaine football team is not looking back at 2017, a year that saw the Borderites win just one game. Instead, they are looking forward to a new year in the new Lake Division of the Northwest Conference 2A ranks.
Five of the 9 Blaine loses last year were by 6 points or less. Head coach Jay Dodd says his squad is working on the intangibles of toughness, grit and character to turn things around in 2018.
There's talent to work with in the border city. Dod is expecting big contributions from linemen Wyatt Cole and Connor Ellis as well as fullback/linebackers Hudson Reid and Jacob Westfall.
Wideout Chase Abshere posted 50 receptions for over 700 yards last season. The senior leader says he's impressed with what he has seen so far during practice.
Dodd says he likes the new 2 division breakdown in the NWC 2A. "We think that at the end of the year there's still a great playoff opportunity for the top couple of teams in the Lake Division, but you gotta play well."
In addition to divisional rivals in Bellingham, Sehome, Mountlake Terrace, Anacortes and Cedarcrest, the Borderites face a tough Lynden Christian squad and a 2017 playoff team in Cedar Park Christian in their non-conference schedule. Blaine will open the season versus Earl Marriott at home August 31st.
