Prep Football Training Camp - Mt. Baker Mountaineers
2017-2018 Record: 7-4; 3-3 in League
The Mount Baker football squad will be chasing their 7th straight trip to the state playoffs in 2018. The Mountaineers will have to do it without school record setting receiver Thomas Barbo, playing a non-conference schedule that features two 2017 playoff squads and braving the final 6-week gauntlet of playing the other 1A Northwest Conference schools each twice.
Mount Baker coach Ron Lepper says he has a group that "gets it" and they are working on a sense of urgency as the season begins. The coach says he is focusing his attention to the trenches.
Kaleb Bass enter his 3rd year at quarterback for the Mountaineers. The senior will look to big Michael Kentner to become a go-to target. Bass says he and Kentner have great chemistry on the field.
Lepper, who was named Mount Baker Athletic Director back in June, says Kenner needs to step into that Barbo role. "We gotta have that ability maybe to losen things up or make a big play downfield when we have to."
Other players expected to standout include Sam Barrett and Jason Lee in the backfield. Braeden Shannon and Logan Sanday will anchor the line on both sides of the ball.
Mt. Baker gets playoff squads Lynden and Cascade as well as 2A Lake Division favorite Sehome in their non-conference schedule. They also face three straight road games at Meridian, Nooksack Valley and Lynden Christian in weeks 5-through-7.
The Mountaineers open the season hosting Lynden August 31st.
