AP Football Poll: Squalicum Cracks Top-10
October 24, 2018
As the regular season comes to an end for some and the playoffs begin for others, four Whatcom County teams are now represented in the Top-10 rankings of the Associated Press prep football poll. The week 9 poll was released Wednesday.
Following a 43-40 division clinching victory over Oak Harbor last week, the Squalicum Storm (7-1) moved up from the "receiving votes" category to No. 8 in the 3A classification. The Wesco 3A North champs will play Snohomish in a crossover game for the top seed to districts on the road Friday.
Lynden (8-0) is the highest ranked Whatcom County team after beating Vancouver College 38-16 last week. The Lions moved up two spots in the 2A ranks trailing only Hockinson. Lynden will enjoy a bye week before opening their postseason in week 10.
There's plenty of movement for three local teams in the 1A classification. Meridian (6-2), fresh off a 13-to-9 win over Mount Baker, jumped 5 spots to No. 10. The Mountaineers (5-3) slip from No. 6 to No. 10.

The Trojans will look to win the 1A Northwest Conference title with a victory over Lynden Christian on Thursday. Mount Baker needs a win over Nooksack Valley Thursday and the Lyncs to beat Meridian to create a 3-way tie for the top spot and force a tie-breaker.
Lynden Christian (6-2) blanked the Pioneers 41-0 last week, but remained in the "receiving votes" category of the 1A classification.
The only other ranked team out of the Northwest Conference is Archbishop Murphy. The Wildcats (4-2) remain at No. 9 in the 2A after beating 27-13 last week. Wesco 3A North member Oak harbor slipped 3 spots to No. 10 following their loss to Squalicum.
