Bells Edge Pickles in Series Opener

The Bellingham Bells took game 1 In a match-up between West Coast League divisional leaders Friday night. The Bells beat the Portland Pickles 2-1 at Joe Martin Field.
Ernie Yake drove in both Bellingham runs with a two-out, single in the bottom of the 8th. The Gonzaga freshman went 2-for-4 on a night that saw the Bells held to just 4 hits.
A trifecta of Bellingham pitchers held the Pickles to just 5 hits on the night. Starter Grant Holman struck out 4 over six scoreless innings of work. Ben Leeper worked two innings to pick up his first victory of the season. Taylor Davis worked a scoreless 9th inning, notching his second save of the year.
The Bellingham (8-5) win snaps a 5-game Portland (9-3) win streak.
The two teams play the second game of their series Saturday night. Righty Johnny Wilting (1-0; 2.76 ERA) goes to the mound for the Bells. Brad McVay (2-0; 0.00 ERA) gets the call for the Pickles. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
