Bellingham wins district championship in shootout

The Bellingham soccer team claimed the the district championship Saturday night at Civic Stadium. The top-ranked Red Raiders (17-0-1) beat the Sehome Mariners 2-1 in a shootout. 

Sehome's Danny Fazio opened up the scoring in the 21st minute to give the Mariners a first half lead. Aaron Carter scored in the 45th minute to pull Bellingham even. 

The Red Raiders scored on all 5 shoot-out attempts and held Sehome (14-4-1) to 3 goals in 4 shots to win the match. 

Bellingham and Sehome join Burlington and Archbishop Murphy in advancing to state out of district 1/2. State play begins next week and culminates with the championship game at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner May. 26th.

Bellingham and Sehome are scheduled to open state tournament play on Wednesday at Civic Stadium. The Red Raiders will play Fife (7:00pm) while the Mariners will square off against R.A. Long. (Time T.B.A.). 

In other district action involving Whatcom County teams, Squalicum (18-2-0) is off to 3A state following a 3-1 victory over Meadowdale at Shoreline Stadium. The Storm return to the pitch Wednesday versus Garfield at 7:00pm at Interbay Stadium in Seattle.  

 

In 1A play, Meridian (9-10-1) saw their season come to an end with a 7-1 loss to University Prep  at Sammamish High School.
